| By Barb Van Loo ALAMO, Mich. – Once a month this small community brings together bidders and an eclectic mix of merchandise. Jim Pierce, Pierce Auction Service, holds his monthly consignment auction in his auction barn, and the auctions provide an opportunity for a person to consign one item, a few items, or a small estate. Usually it is possible to find everything from useful household items to antiques, weapons and tools. The December auction featured guns, tools, and some general household goods in one ring. and antiques including glassware, pottery and furniture in another. A third ring featured toys including Barbie dolls and Barbie clothes and David Winter cottages including many pieces that have been retired. Guns included a 12 gauge Savage over and under and a Remington 20 gauge 1100 lightweight. The Savage found a final bid of $335 and the Remington was declared sold at $400. Even though it was a restrike, a Remington bronze titled The Rattlesnake still reached $190. An old pedal car ready to be restored crossed the block and earned $100. Found among the glassware items there was a Consolidated Phoenix vase that found interest. This piece sold for $45. A milk glass epergne sold for $42 and a stein marked Germany found a final bid of $32. Always popular Roseville pottery pieces were found in one of the consignments. Among these were a Zephyr Lily pot that sold for $55; a Freesia basket that also sold for $55; and a Zephyr Lily planter that earned $100. A Zephyr Lily hanging basket saw a final bid of $70 and a tall Zephyr Lily vase crossed the block for $120. Made by Van Briggle, a ewer found a final bid of $50. A jardinière made by Weller sold for $60. One of the stops on Senator John F. Kennedy’s campaign tour was in Kalamazoo, Mich. At this auction the history buff was able to obtain one of the campaign posters from this visit. This poster, in red, white and blue, and simply stating Senator John F. Kennedy crossed the block for $75. Among the furniture items a child’s Victorian rocker in pink upholstery sold for $95; a spool cabinet on legs earned $150; and an outdoor patio set crossed the block for $60.
